Open Rhinoplasty vs. Closed Rhinoplasty – Cincinnati, Ohio

There are two main approaches for Rhinoplasty Surgery (Nose Reshaping Surgery): Open Rhinoplasty or Closed Rhinoplasty. As a skilled Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Vennemeyer will choose the best approach for you based on your anatomy, individual needs and aesthetic goals. Bleeding can occur that results in a hematoma or collection of blood under the skin. This usually needs to be drained surgically. Infection can occur, but is rare after Rhinoplasty. Skin loss can occur if the blood supply to the skin is not sufficient. This can range from minimal areas that heal without intervention or, rarely, it may be severe enough to require further surgery to correct. Nerve injury can occur resulting in areas of numbness or paralysis of certain areas of the face. This is usually temporary, resolving over several weeks to months.

Rhinoplasty patients should expect swelling and bruising after surgery. Typically, the initial swelling lasts one to two weeks. Although you may see improvement at two weeks after the initial swelling subsides, most plastic surgeons tell patients it takes six months to a year to see the final results of your rhinoplasty surgery!  Most patients need to take one week off from their normal activities or work in order to recuperate. After your rhinoplasty, you will have an external splint that will support the outside of your nose. If you have stitches or splints that need to be removed, this typically occurs at five to seven days. If you have nasal packing, this needs to be removed one or two days following surgery. Typically, sutures are removed about five days after surgery. You will need to sleep with your head elevated to minimize swelling for the first few weeks. Cold compresses will also help for the first day or two after surgery, but should only be used at twenty minute intervals to avoid skin necrosis. Most patients require pain medicine during the first few days. Mineral makeup can be used 48 hours after surgery to camouflage bruising. You can resume light exercise like walking after the first week, but you will need to gradually work back into your normal routine over four to six weeks.
