Liposuction - Cincinnati, Ohio
| Liposuction Surgery – Cincinnati, Ohio Cincinnati Plastic Surgeon Dr. Michael Vennemeyer performs liposuction surgery for those in Cincinnati Ohio and Northern Kentucky. Liposuction is the most common cosmetic surgical procedure performed according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons' 2006 statistics. As many in Cincinnati, Ohio and the surrounding areas know, Liposuction is an excellent way to improve the contour of your body by selectively removing unwanted fat. Ideal candidates for Liposuction are at a steady weight, eat well and exercise regularly. This is important for maintaining your result. How Liposuction is Performed - Cincinnati, Ohio Liposuction is performed by using special cannulas inserted through tiny hidden incisions. Fat is removed through the hollow cannulas by suction. Before liposuction is performed, a mixture of local anesthetic and medicine is injected into the areas to be treated. This helps to decrease blood loss during surgery and helps to minimize pain following the procedure. Liposuction can be performed on almost any area of the body. It is most commonly used on the abdomen, flanks ("love handles"), thighs, hips ("saddlebags") and buttocks. It can also be used on the face, neck, arms or legs. What to Expect After Liposuction - Cincinnati, Ohio Expect mild to moderate discomfort after surgery. Immediately after surgery you will actually weigh more because of the fluid that is injected prior to surgery. Most of the fluid is sucked out with the fat, but the remaining fluid is absorbed by the body and excreted by the kidneys as urine. After your surgery, special compression garments or wraps will be applied to the treated areas. This decreases swelling and decreases the time until your final result is achieved. Most liposuction is done as an outpatient procedure so you can go home the day of surgery. You will need to have someone take care of you for at least 24 hours after surgery. After your liposuction procedure you will need to limit your activities for about a week. Depending on the extent of your Liposuction, expect to take one to two weeks off work so that you have plenty of time to heal. When you wake up from surgery, you will have gauze bandages over the liposuction incision sites and will be wearing a compression garment. It is best to wear your compression garments for six weeks to limit swelling and encourage skin retraction. Also, you may have bruising that can persist for several weeks. Most of the swelling will resolve over six to eight weeks, but your final result will not be apparent for about six months. Liposuction Aftercare - Cincinnati, Ohio If too much or too little fat is removed from an area during liposuction surgery, contour abnormalities can result. Occasionally, additional procedures may be required to correct this. If the overlying skin does not contract sufficiently after liposuction surgery, skin laxity can result in a poor cosmetic result. During your private consultation with Cincinnati Plastic Surgeon Dr. Vennemeyer, he will assess your skin elasticity to determine your risk of this. After liposuction, bruising is relatively common and can take up to four weeks to resolve completely. After liposuction, swelling is expected. Wearing post-op compression garments will help the swelling resolve faster. Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolus (PE) are clotting problems that are serious. This can occur after any surgery and liposuction is no exception. During your plastic surgery consultation, Dr. Vennemeyer will assess your risk of this and take appropriate measures to reduce this risk. This may include the use of special leg stockings, compressive leg pumps and medications such as Lovenox. A phenomenon where free particles of fat can enter the blood stream is a possibility with liposuction surgery. If a sufficient amount passes to vital organs like the heart, lungs and brain, serious problems can result in fat embolization. This is very rare. Another very rare complication is perforation of vital organs resulting from misdirection of the liposuction cannula during liposuction surgery. Dr. Vennemeyer performs an extensive exam prior to your surgery to identify findings that may increase your risk of this. Excess local anesthetic from the tumescent solution entering the blood stream can lead to lidocaine toxicity. This is a rare complication. At high levels this can lead to serious complications. Dr. Vennemeyer will carefully calculate the safe amount of medication to use based on your weight in order to avoid this. Liposuction - Frequently Asked Questions Can I gain weight after Liposuction? Yes! If you do not eat healthy and exercise to maintain your result you can gain weight in the areas that were liposuctioned and in other areas. Is Liposuction a good way to lose a lot of weight? No. Liposuction is best for those who are near their ideal body weight. It provides the best results in those who have areas that are resistant to weight loss despite diet and exercise. How much Liposuction is safe? Research is continuing to search for the answer to this question.
