Liposuction with Tummy Tuck Surgery - Columbus, Ohio

Liposuction with Tummy Tuck Surgery – Columbus, Ohio
Columbus Plastic Surgeon Dr. Michael Vennemeyer often combines Liposuction with Tummy Tuck surgery for his Columbus patients to achieve optimal results. For women, an important aspect of getting beautiful tummy tuck results is not only achieving a flatter abdomen, but also getting a narrower waist. Sex appeal research studies have analyzed body proportions extensively. Interestingly, researchers have consistently found that when analyzing female figures, sex appeal directly correlates to a women's hip to waist ratio. The narrower the waist compared to the hips, the higher the sex appeal. Combining liposuction and tummy tuck surgery is an excellent surgical approach to optimize abdominal sculpting.

How Liposuction is used with Tummy Tuck Surgery - Columbus, Ohio
Although tummy tuck surgery can remove excess skin, fat and stretch marks in the lower abdomen, a tummy tuck does not decrease the amount of fat in the mid or upper abdomen. In addition, a tummy tuck does not account for fat deposits or 'love handles' on the sides of your abdomen. When these areas are concerning to a patient undergoing tummy tuck surgery, liposuction might be an additional option.

During your consultation with Columbus Plastic Surgeon Dr. Vennemeyer, he will discuss all your options, so that you can make an informed decision. In many cases, liposuction can be done safely at the same time as your tummy tuck.

If you need a more extensive tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) or require a significantly large amount of liposuction, Dr. Vennemeyer may recommend a staged procedure. Staged procedures, when appropriate, can be safer than trying to do too much surgery at once. In addition, it allows the plastic surgeon ample time to aggressive treat the 'problem areas.'

Risks and Potential Complications
  1. Contour abnormalities can result from liposuction if too much or too little fat is removed from an area. Sometimes additional procedures may be required to correct this.
  2. Skin laxity can result from liposuction if the overlying skin does not contract sufficiently after surgery, resulting in a poor cosmetic result. At your consultation Columbus Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Vennemeyer, will assess your skin elasticity to determine your risk.
  3. Bruising is relatively common after liposuction and can take up to a month to completely resolve.
  4. Swelling is expected after liposuction and tummy tuck surgery. Wearing post-operative garments will help this resolve faster.
  5. Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolus (PE) are clotting problems that are serious medical problems. This can occur after any surgery and liposuction is no exception. Dr. Vennemeyer will assess your risk of this and take appropriate measures to reduce this risk. This may include the use of special leg stockings, compressive leg pumps and medications.
  6. Fat embolization is a phenomenon where free particles of fat can enter the blood stream. If a sufficient amount passes to vital organs like the heart, lungs and brain, serious problems can result. This is very rare.
  7. Perforation of vital organs can occur from misdirection of the liposuction cannula during surgery. This is also a very rare complication. Dr. Vennemeyer will perform an extensive exam prior to your surgery to identify findings that may increase your risk of this.
  8. Lidocaine toxicity is a rare complication that results from excess local anesthetic from the tumescent solution entering the blood stream. At high levels this can lead to serious complications. Dr. Vennemeyer will carefully calculate the safe amount of medication to use based on your weight in order to avoid this.
