Facelift Surgery Overview - Cincinnati, Ohio

Mini Facelift Surgery - Cincinnati, Ohio
The Mini Facelift is performed through a shorter incision to minimize scarring. It usually involves the skin only and not the deeper tissues. Although this may be a good option for someone with minimal signs of aging it is less effective for those with more severe jowling and wrinkling. Also, many plastic surgeons feel that this operation has less durability since only the skin is tightened. In general, the smaller the procedure, the smaller the result you will have (despite the marketing hype). However, for younger patients who are not good candidates for a full or traditional facelift and necklift, a mini facelift may be an excellent option.

Midface Lift (Cheek Lift) Surgery - Cincinnati, Ohio
When sagging cheeks create deep marionette lines (also called nasolabial folds), but there are no jowls or banding of the neck, a Midface Lift may be the best solution. The midface lift specifically addresses the skin and muscle tissue in the cheeks. After a midface lift, patients enjoy tighter, smoother cheeks that result in a more youthful appearance.

Facelift Surgery - Cincinnati, Ohio
Unlike the midface lift that only addresses the middle third of the face (also known as the midface or cheek area), Facelift Surgery (also called a Full Facelift) addresses the lower two-thirds of the face. This procedure is more extensive than a mini facelift and is designed to reduce the appearance of very pronounced tissue sagging and volume loss. During a facelift, your plastic surgeon will address the muscle, fat and skin in the lower two-thirds of your face to achieve a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. Remember that a facelift does not address the eyelids or brow and forehead areas. However, these areas can be addressed at the same time with a Browlift and/or an Upper Blepharoplasty and Lower Blepharoplasty.

Necklift Surgery Overview – Cincinnati, Ohio

Many times facelift surgery is combined with Necklift Surgery. The type and extent of Necklift surgery depends on your individual needs. Cervicoplasty is a procedure whereby excess neck skin is excised. Platysmaplasty is a procedure that involves the neck muscles being tightened or altered. Liposuction may also be performed on the neck to remove fat deposits from this area.

Facelift / Necklift Surgery Recovery – Cincinnati, Ohio

Facelift and Necklift patients should expect swelling and bruising after surgery. Most patients take one to two weeks off from their normal activities or work depending on the extent of their facelift procedure. Any Facelift or Necklift procedure will require you to sleep with your head elevated for the first week or two to minimize swelling. In addition, cold compresses for the first 48 hours can be beneficial in decreasing swelling and bruising, but should not be left on for more than twenty minutes at a time. Most patients require pain medicine for several days after Facelift and Necklift surgery. Frequently, facelift patients may have one or two small drainage tubes after surgery. These are typically removed after the first few days. Check with your doctor before using mineral makeup, but typically this can be applied 48 hours after surgery to camouflage bruising and incision sites. You may resume light exercise like walking after week one, but will need to gradually work back into your normal routine over 4-6 weeks.

FaceLift Surgery - Frequently Asked Questions

Will a Facelift correct my heavy brow and my aging eyelid appearance?
A facelift does not address the eyelids or brow and forehead areas. These areas can be addressed at the same time with a brow lift, upper eyelid surgery (upper blepharoplasty) or lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty) as necessary.

How much younger will I look after a Facelift?
This is difficult to predict. It depends on your current appearance and the procedures you have. For example, if you have lots of excess facial skin, eyelid skin and a sagging browline and only undergo a facelift, you will not maximize your appearance because all the aged features would not be addressed.

What are the possible complications of facelift surgery?
Bleeding can occur that results in a hematoma or collection of blood under the skin. This usually needs to be drained surgically. Infection can occur, but is rare after a facelift. Skin loss can occur if the blood supply to the skin is not sufficient. This can range from minimal areas that heal without intervention or it can, rarely, be severe enough to require further surgery to correct. Nerve injury can occur resulting in areas of numbness or paralysis of certain areas of the face. This is usually temporary, resolving over several weeks to months. Asymmetry is the rule rather than the exception when it comes to peoples' faces. A facelift generally does not change this and your normal asymmetries will persist. Mild asymmetry of incisions is possible, but this is usually not noticeable because all incisions cannot be seen at the same time.

When do I need a Facelift?
Only you can answer this question! The bottom line is that you never need any cosmetic procedures. You are a candidate for a facelift when you feel bothered by aging features on your face and would feel better about yourself if these features were rejuvenated. For some people this is in their forties, and for some it is in their seventies or beyond.

If I want multiple procedures can I have them all performed at once?
Usually yes. However, we are committed to your safety and need to limit the number of procedures so that blood loss, time under anesthesia, and your individual health issues are considered in order to minimize the risk of complications. It is sometimes necessary to do multiple procedures over two or more trips to the operating room for safety reasons.

How is a "Traditional" Facelift is Performed?

Facelift surgery is performed through an incision in front of the ear that extends around the ear and into the skin behind the ear. The incision is then extended along the hairline or into the scalp to camouflage the future scar as much as possible. The skin of the face and neck is elevated from the underlying tissues in order to re-drape it and extra sagging skin is removed. The deeper muscle and connective tissue layer of the face is also addressed and tightened to support the re-draped skin. By performing most of the tightening in this deeper layer, the skin can be re-draped less tightly in order to avoid looking over-stretched.

What is a "Mini Facelift"?
This is a facelift performed through a shorter incision to minimize scarring. It usually involves the skin only and not the deeper tissues. Although a mini facelift may be a good option for someone with minimal signs of aging, it is less effective for those with more severe jowling and wrinkling. Also, many plastic surgeons feel that this operation has less durability since only the skin is tightened. In general, the smaller the procedure, the smaller the result you will have (despite the marketing hype).

Can't I just get BOTOX and fillers to correct my aging face?
BOTOX and Dermal Fillers (Restylane and Juvederm) are excellent minimally invasive options for facial rejuvenation. However, they are expensive and provide only a temporary fix. Additionally, they tend to provide the most improvement for minor wrinkles. These products will not correct excess sagging skin to the degree that a facelift will. Despite more upfront cost, a facelift may provide a better and longer-lasting result. If you are not ready to have a surgical procedure, however, these minimally invasive options are a great way to get some improvement.

Plastic Surgery Financing
There are many excellent financing options and easy monthly payment plans available for facelift surgery.
