Eyelid Surgery / Eyelid Lift - Cincinnati, Ohio
Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Overview Cincinnati Plastic Surgeon Dr. Michael Vennemeyer performs Eyelid Surgery (Eyelid Lift Surgery) for those in Cincinnati, Ohio and Kentucky. Blepharoplasty is the medical term for Eyelid Surgery or Eyelid Lift Surgery. Eyelid surgery is one of the most common cosmetic plastic surgery procedures. During your private consultation with Plastic Surgeon Dr. Vennemeyer, he will carefully listen to your aesthetic goals. He will then evaluate the elasticity of your upper and lower eyelid skin, as well as the extent of eyelid skin sagging and the loss of volume around your eyes. Dr. Vennemeyer will also evaluate your brow and forehead for signs of brow sagging (also known as brow ptosis). Many times those inquiring about eyelid surgery also have a 'heavy' brow which needs to be evaluated. Although eyelid surgery alone may be the appropriate procedure for some patients, others require both eyelid surgery and brow lift surgery together to get the well rested, beautiful and natural results they are seeking. Dr. Vennemeyer will carefully evaluate your facial features and take into account your skin, tissue and muscle laxity to determine the best procedure(s) to address your concerns. He will then discuss with you in detail the best approach to getting aesthetically beautiful and natural looking results. After Dr. Vennemeyer has answered all of your questions and discussed all your treatment options, together you can decide which eyelid surgery and/or brow lift surgery is best for you. Eyelid Lift Surgery (Blepharoplasty) – Cincinnati, Ohio With time, wrinkles, sagging skin and loss of volume all contribute to the appearance of aging eyes. When this happens, no amount of 'magic' eye creams or rest can correct this. Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) is an excellent option for those desiring a more well-rested and rejuvenated appearance. The surgery also helps correct some inherited traits, such as chronic dark circles around the eyes. Blepharoplasty may be performed in conjunction with another treatment to provide optimal results (such as a Brow Lift/ Forehead Lift, or in combination with a Facelift Surgery). Types of Eyelid Lift Surgery (Blepharoplasty) – Cincinnati, Ohio Eyelid surgery may be needed for just the upper eyelids (Upper Eyelid Lift or Upper Blepharoplasty), for just the lower eyelids (Lower Eyelid Surgery or Lower Blepharoplasty) or for both the upper and lower eyelids (Quad Blepharoplasty). Preparing for your Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) – Cincinnati, Ohio During your consultation with Plastic Surgeon Dr. Vennemeyer, make sure you discuss any type of eye conditions you may have as well as any previous eye surgeries. How is Eyelid Lift Surgery (Blepharoplasty) preformed? During Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) the plastic surgeon makes an incision that is later hidden by the eyelashes or the natural skin fold. Excess skin and fatty tissue are removed through this incision, which should heal well after Blepharoplasty, leaving little or no visible scar. If the surgeon performs a lower Blepharoplasty, fat may be redistributed to create a more even appearance and excess tissue is removed. What will my Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty) scars look like? Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift) scars generally heal very well. Cincinnati Plastic Surgeon Dr. Vennemeyer takes great care to hide eyelid incisions in the natural eyelid creases behind the lash line to help camouflage the scar. Mineral makeup can be applied 48 hours after surgery and scars continue to fade for up to a year after surgery. Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Recovery – Cincinnati, Ohio After your eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty), expect to have swelling and bruising around your eyes. If you take it easy after surgery, this may resolve in as little as one week. However, if you increase your activity level too quickly after surgery and do not rest appropriately, you may have bruising and swelling for up to two weeks. Most patients take one or two weeks off from their normal activities or work in order to heal appropriately. After your eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty) sterile saline gauze pads may be applied for the first 48 hours to help decrease post-op swelling and bruising. You will need to sleep with your head elevated to minimize swelling for the first week. Most eyelid surgery patients require some pain medicine for a few days afterwards. Mineral makeup can be used 48 hours after surgery to camouflage bruising and incision sites. You may have sutures that need to be removed 5-7 days after surgery. You can resume light exercise like walking after the first week, but you will need to gradually work back into your normal routine over 4-6 weeks. Eyelid Lift Surgery - Possible Complications As with all surgeries, the risks associated with Blepharoplasty surgery include bleeding, infection and scaring. In addition, skin necrosis (skin loss) can occur if there is an inadequate blood supply to the skin. This can range from minimal areas that heal without intervention or rarely, can be severe enough to require further surgery to correct. As with all surgeries, nerve injury can occur resulting in areas of numbness or paralysis in the area of the procedure. This is usually temporary, resolving over several weeks to months. It is important to remember that asymmetry is the rule rather than the exception when it comes to peoples' faces. Eyelid surgery generally does not change this and your normal asymmetries will not change. Mild asymmetry of the incisions is also possible. Eyelid Surgery - Frequently Asked Questions Can Eyelid Surgery be combined with a Facelift? Yes! Many patients have eyelid surgery along with facelift surgery and/or brow lift surgery. Combining facial procedures can often help restore a more youthful balance to your face and give you more natural looking results. During your consultation with Dr. Vennemeyer, he will discuss your options and together you will decide if you are a good candidate for multiple procedures. When do I need Eyelid Surgery? Only you can answer this question! The bottom line is that you never need any cosmetic surgery. If you are a candidate for eyelid surgery and your appearance bothers you, what's standing in your way? Can't I just get BOTOX and fillers to correct my aging eyes? Although these products are great minimally invasive options for facial rejuvenation, they are expensive and only provide a temporary fix. Additionally, they tend to provide the most improvement for minor wrinkles. Botox can improve the appearance of crow's feet, but the only way to correct for excess eyelid skin and bags under the eyes is with eyelid surgery.
